How not to do it!
(22.02.2007)
This strainer shaft was sent to us for repair with the damage as you see it in the photo.
This shaft has been 'Metal Sprayed' and used in an application where the unit is subjected to a degree of vibration during operation.
The result is that the 'metal spray' coating breaks down and cracks across the surface and then small sections of the coating come away from the parent material.
This could also cause a major problem, if the pieces breaking off get into other areas of the equipment further down the line.

This is not to say that this process is not a way of repairing a worn shaft, but it has limitation for the application it is used for.
This unit was successfully repaired by "Spiral Welding" and will last as long as if it was a new one (if not longer) and will not come off.

Every little (repair) helps

A new schedule is in place to refurbish propeller shafts for a range of current sea rescue boats.
The prop shafts are of a high grade Stainless Steel and require the specialist repair that "Spiral Weld" has established, to return the worn areas back to new condition, so they can be put back into service for another term of reliable seagoing rescue operations around the coast of England.
